Heartquake by Terry Newman

A muse called Moose…

I wish I could tell you Heartquake came to me in a flash of brilliant inspiration, brought down from the heavens by my muse.

My writing doesn’t work that way. My muse, whose name is Moose (get it? Moose the Muse) doesn’t work that way, either. Let’s be honest, Moose barely works.

Moose prefers to tease me. He’ll dangle a character’s name in front of me. It just floats in the tense air between us. Moose dares me to do something with. Quite frankly, it’s a challenge he knows very well I can’t refuse.

From that character, a story slowly emerges. It’s murky, at first, and muddled. And that’s just the way Moose likes it. That’s exactly how Charlee Lightheart, the heroine of Heartquake, developed. Just a name, at first, who had a story that needed telling.

And since I can’t plot, Charlee and I made the journey throughout the novel together. Sometimes, she would surprise me with a revelation about her backstory. Or her thoughts on her romantic interest, Riley Brockton (who, in turn, kept his own secrets from me).

My apartment may be small, but I do love the early morning view. It’s a sign that the day is filled with potential. I share these with friends and on social media. People are probably tired of having to look at my sunrises, but I never tire of photographing them.

You might think I’m being a bit harsh on Moose. And perhaps I am. To his credit, he doesn’t just drop me off in the middle of creative nowhere. He continues to tinker in the background of the story.

One character leads to another. Take Jared Sparrow. His role in Charlee’s story was simply to provide a springboard for a major event. But thanks to Moose, Jared grew a personality all of his own and now I’m working on his story.

But wait—there’s more. To show you how deviously clever Moose is, Jared’s story, which I’m currently writing, has prompted another book with characters crying for attention. A character appeared in a scene in Jared’s book that I didn’t even know was there. Well played, Moose. Well played.

Inspiration? No, mine isn’t the classic lightning bolt of an idea fully formed that I frantically scribble down word for word. My inspiration is more like the slow drip of a faucet, where one imaginative drop blends into the next. And if I’m lucky enough to have stopped up the basin, they blend together in a basinful of ideas that I can meaningfully mold into a story.

Heartquake is just that. Inspired by the well-timed creative droplets of Moose, Charlee finds herself in a love story with Riley that defies her expectations against a backdrop of a small Ohio town that confronts the fracking industry, political corruption, and corporate greed. Charlee faces circumstances that tug at her conscience. The appalling conditions her neighbors face because of the fracking outrage her. But she’s fought one battle against a giant corporation, does she really have the energy to slay another Goliath? And if she does, what will become of her relationship with Riley?

Coffee shop owner, Charlee Lightheart, views corporations with contempt. She believes her father died at the hands of the pharmaceutical industry. When she's approached to run for city council on an anti-fracking platform, she's reluctant. She's not sure this movement is her cause.

Billionaire Riley Brockton has given up on love. Then he walks into Charlee's shop. All he wanted was coffee and muffins. From that first electrifying touch, he knows he needs more. He withholds one piece of vital information: he's a lionshifter.

A rogue reporter sets out to reveal the one secret that can destroy the anti-fracking movement and the couple's relationship. Can their love survive the truth and public exposure?

Excerpt

His hands seemed more like paws. Not destructive mauling paws of a feral beast, but the large loving ones of an animal dedicated to protecting those he loved. She feared if he kept his hand on hers too long, she would start to think about love at first sight again. Yet she didn’t move it.

When he did remove his hand from hers, she felt an immediate and crushing disconnect. She fell back to earth and experienced the gripping weight and limitation of the force of gravity. Did an astronaut experience this remorse and loss of freedom when he re-entered the earth’s atmosphere and found himself bound by gravity?

“I apologize,” he said, as he shook his head slightly. “I think I’ve overstepped my bounds. That’s not at all what I intended to happen. That was uncharacteristic of me.”

“Don’t be,” she said. She couldn’t take her gaze from his eyes.

“Pardon me?”

“Don’t be sorry.”

Speed dating with Terry:

Oxford comma, yes or no?  Of course, the Oxford comma.

Coffee or tea or wine? Coffee, hands down. Black usually, but I do love a good caramel latte.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? Annoying Sunbeam Yellow. After my first cup of coffee in the morning, I just don’t know when to shut up.

What are you known for? My friends think of me when they see a bad pun and send it to me. And I appreciate it.

Morning rooster, night owl, or midday lark? Definitely a morning person. I get my best writing done then.

What comes first, character or plot (or other)? Actually, a name pops into my mind, and I create a character based on that. Then the plot forms.

Damned When I I Didn't by Cherie Coyler

Welcome, Cherie. Tell us about what you write.

I write paranormal and fantasy stories grounded in the real world. My published novels are young adult paranormal romances. I have a middle-grade ghost story coming out later this year, and a couple adult paranormal romances in the works.

When did your writing journey begin? What drew you to writing?

Chicago Botanical Gardens.

Chicago Botanical Gardens.

I was in my thirties when I penned my first novel. My husband and I like to go for long walks. The photo is from the Chicago Botanical Gardens, one of our favorite places to go. During our walks, I’d talk about different story ideas I had. He’d chime in with his thoughts, and before we knew it, we’d have created a mini world hidden within our own. One day he asked me why I don’t write the story I talked about the most. So I did. And I enjoyed it so much I kept going until I honed my craft and found homes for some of my books.

What was your inspiration for Damned When I Didn’t?

The premise for this book blossomed from my desire to write something that hasn’t been done before, which isn’t easy when there are so many authors writing paranormal and supernatural stories. Well, you don’t find many YA succubus books. And then I thought, wouldn’t it be ironic if the succubus in my book is a virgin? How would that work? And how did she end up a succubus? Could she survive? Would she want to? I sure hoped so! So I put pen to paper and Avery Williams was born. She’s thrown into a life she didn’t ask for and she’s determined not to lose her human side or her morals.

Death isn’t the end for eighteen-year-old Avery Williams, and her final resting place isn’t beyond the Golden Gates. No, the Queen of the Damned has plans for her and, unbeknownst to Avery, fought hard to gain possession of her soul. As Hell’s newest succubus, Avery is expected to siphon life from the living. It only takes a long, meaningful kiss, but for a virgin like Avery, kissing guys she barely knows isn’t something she’s comfortable doing. Avery focuses on the upside of her fate—she’ll be returning home, or so she thinks. When the Queen of the Damned cuts her off from her old life, Avery is determined to find a way back to her family and friends, even if it means facing Hell’s fury if she’s caught.

Any new projects on the horizon?

I’m thrilled to have my first middle grade ghost story Friends to the End coming out later this year with The Wild Rose Press. Between edits for that novel, I’ve been playing around with a sequel to Damned When I Didn’t and a couple adult paranormal romances.

About Cherie

Cherie Colyer is best known for her young adult, paranormal romance thrillers, including the Embrace series (featuring witchcraft) and Challenging Destiny (a story about outsmarting heaven and hell.) She usually has several book projects in the works. She enjoys helping budding writers improve their craft and learn more about the publishing industry. Cherie lives in Illinois with her family. She happily visits schools and libraries and is a member of SCBWI (Society of Children Book Writers and Illustrators).

This sounds cliché, but read as much as you can, and read a little of everything. You can learn a lot about flow, characterization, plot, etc. by reading different books. And don’t give up. Writing is hard at times. First drafts often (maybe even always) suck. But that’s why we revise. So keep going, finish the first draft, and remember to have fun.

What was the most interesting part of the story to write/research?

I like to learn as much as I can about the supernatural elements in my stories, put a unique twist on what I learn, and weave these elements into my stories. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about ghosts, angel and demon hierarchy, witchcraft, vampires, werewolves, and many more things that go bump in the night. I’ve also discovered some interesting locations, many of which are in my series.

Excerpt:

I scurried to the bathroom, figuring I didn’t want to waste one second checking to see if there really were clothes for me in the closet. I took a speed-shower. I’d just finished wrapping a plush black towel around my body when the door opened. He wasn’t kidding about pushing me aside.

“Not bad, for a girl.” His hands went to the drawstring on his pajamas pants.

“At least let me get out of here.” I turned sideways to squeeze past him, accidently bumping into his hand as I stepped into the hallway. The contact managed to move the towel enough to show the smooth skin of my hip and get my heart pounding a little quicker. Sure the sudden increase of my pulse was due to nerves—it had been a weird twenty-four hours—I hurried to the bedroom.

His laughter bellowed out of the small bathroom. “You’re going to have to loosen up if we’re going to be living together.”

“Do not!” I called back.

The shower started, but he’d left the door open. “Succubi are supposed to be promiscuous. Not shriek at the sight of a naked man.”

“Well, I’m not most succubi and you’re not a man,” I retorted.

My jaw dropped when I opened the closet and found it stuffed with clothes. The things on the right were obviously Cole’s. A hint of his cologne wafted off of them. The left side, however, was crammed with juniors’ jeans, skirts, tops, sweaters—everything I could possibly want and not department store knock-offs. Designer brands that I used to dream of owning.

I fanned through the various items, wishing I had time to try them all on. If Megan knew the road to Hell was stocked with the best clothes, she’d purchase a first-class ticket.

“So I’m not a man?” Cole asked from behind me.

He leaned against the doorframe, wearing a towel that conveniently hung low enough to emphasize his six-pack abs and the muscles leading to, you know. He didn’t bother to dry off either. His chest glistened with water droplets.

“I have parts that beg to differ,” he added

Rise for Me by Kristal Harris

Welcome back to Visiting Authors, Kristal. I always enjoy having you. Let’s refresh our readers…

Do you find inspiration in your own life for your writing?

I do find inspiration from my own life, especially for Rise for Me. Mariah, the heroine, is afflicted with a hairy birthmark under her eye. My mother was born with a hairy, pink birthmark in the center of her forehead. It was later removed by a plastic surgeon, but she was embarrassed. I remember feeling so bad for her, but not truly understanding her insecurity until I became disabled. Long story short, I wear drop-foot braces to walk. People stare and it’s uncomfortable, but I’ve learned to ignore it and realized my disability makes me unique. For a long time, it bothered me and caused me to be insecure.

Vampire and warlock, Roman Lee, spent centuries alone as ringmaster of the carnival. After befriending and healing a scarred, young woman, Roman realizes Mariah is his mate. He waits for her, but when she departs from his life, his torture knows no bounds. Now he's risen, unforgiving and angry, forced from his grave by the one woman who captured his heart, but will another secret and the call of his mate change everything?

The steady call of Roman's blood and the promise of peace brings Mariah Stone home to the carnival and the vampire she left behind. He ignores her until she forces him from the grave with her blood. His anger crushes her already broken spirit, but she is determined to win Roman's forgiveness and free him from their bond. Denied passion leads them down a path of magic and desire, while a devastating secret threatens eternal love.

Any new projects on the horizon?

Seduction by Blood is another vampire romance I cowrote with another author. It has been contracted with The Wild Rose Press, Inc., but doesn’t have a release date it. Watch for it!

What was the hardest/most unusual/interesting part of the story to write/research?

Although as a child I spent numerous weekends at an amusement park, I didn’t realize my favorite ride, the haunted house, would play such a role in one of my books. That amusement park closed years ago due to a fire, but while writing I pulled from the experience. Once I started researching carnivals, my curiosity took flight and I found myself reading anything I could find on the subject. Funny how that happens!

What was my muse for Rise for Me? A birthmark. Read more here.

As authors, we are expected/encouraged to develop relationships with readers as well as other professionals in our field. Just for fun, I answered another author’s prompt on Facebook that went like this:

Create a fictional story about how we met.

My answer:  We met at the carnival. You were the creepy clown who snuck up on me and scared me half to death. I was angry, so I smacked with you with my corndog, got mustard in your hair, you got angry, we wrestled into the duck-pond booth, both got soaking wet, but it’s all good because we’re friends again. LOL

Not the best writing, I know, but that little answer sparked my imagination and I started thinking what a great idea to write a vampire story set at the carnival. It’s the perfect place for a vampire to hide. Of course, the idea developed into so much more once I started writing it!

Excerpt from Rise for Me…

Mariah stopped directly over where she knew Roman rested. Her own blood surged in her veins every time she stepped on the worn plank. She tilted her head, listening to the call of his blood and the beat of his heart. Lizzie said he wasn’t feeding as much as he should, so there was one sure way to bring Roman out of his grave. She searched the room for something sharp until her gaze landed on a small, jeweled pocketknife. She grabbed it off the table and pulled the blade out of its slot. It was dull, but it would work.

Mariah placed the small blade against her left palm, then held it over the spot where she knew Roman rested. With one downward swipe, the blade pierced her flesh, opening a one-inch gash. Blood poured from the wound and dripped onto the rough, wooden floor planks. She crouched and held her palm over the crack between the boards, making sure the blood reached Roman. With a deep breath, she gathered her courage as her blood continued to splatter in droplets between the planks. The room seemed to groan, and every trinket vibrated when she finally called to the other half of her soul in a loud, demanding voice. “Rise for me, Roman Lee.”

The Warrior's Progeny by Jeny Heckman

Jeny Heckman is back, sharing about her second book in her Heaven and Earth series, The Warrior’s Progeny. Welcome, Jeny!

First, thank you Jean for having me on today I truly appreciate your time and am excited to get to know your readers.

Tell us about what you write.

My fictional Heaven & Earth series is a paranormal romance. They are all novels except for Dee’s Cornucopia, which will come out next year. It will be a novella on one of the supporting characters, a fan favorite named, Dee Taylor.

I also published, Dancing Through Tears, in February, as part of the Australia Burns anthology (it’s in volume two). It was to benefit the wildfire victims in Australia, and is my family’s experience as attendees of the Las Vegas, Route 91 massacre in October 2017.

I also write contemporary fiction.

What drew you to writing?

What drew me to writing was getting lost in stories and characters. So, many books I used to read I loved but wished for one thing or another to change, even daring to believe I might do it one better. So, it was to see if I could, one, do it and two, create something a little different.

What was your inspiration for The Warrior’s Progeny?

Well, the series is about the Greek gods and goddesses and their modern-day counterparts. The powers and weaknesses of these gods and mortals must work together to solve a quest. Each pairing means something. In the Sea Archer, book one, Apollo and Poseidon worked together to build the foundation and walls of Troy. So, in my story, they create the foundation of the series and the quest. Book two the Warrior’s Progeny, is about strength within the family. So, Ares and Hera needed to be the spotlights.

Do you find inspiration in your own life for your writing?

I do have a lot of my family and friend’s quirks and habits in the books. However, funny enough, it wasn’t super intentional. I’ll have my husband or someone say, “That was funny, so and so does that all the time.” And I’ll be like, “Oh, yeah, huh?” Or a habit of one of them will pop up. For instance, cantilevering a bottle cap against another bottle cap to pop it off is something the men in my family do to beer all the time.

Tell us about The Warrior’s Progeny.

The Warrior’s Progeny is about Ares, the Warrior, or god of violent war. The progeny has to do with Hera, who is the goddess of marriage but also has to do with the family and childbirth. Ares, has a modern-day ancestor, Colt Stone, who is a football tight-end for Seattle. Hera’s, ancestor is Dr. Lillian Morgan, a pediatric, cardiothoracic surgeon. They “run into” each other at the wedding of a friend in Hawaii and do not hit it off.

Eventually, upon their return to Seattle, they begin to do charity work together and the relationship progresses. Lilly, is the widow of a perfect man and marriage, with two small children. Colt, is an eligible bachelor with a hardcore reputation and definitely not an ideal family man.

So, they have some challenges. Throw in some supernatural events, and unexplained dream sequences from Greek gods and the bronze age and life gets a whole lot more interesting.

Tell us about your experience with the publishing process.

So, my first novel, the Catch, is about a woman crab fisherman in Alaska. It’s a novel about empowerment, and a woman working in a man’s world. I’d never written anything before in my life and self-published it. I fell in love with writing and began going to conferences and taking classes on writing. I came up with an idea for this series and pitched the idea to a couple of New York agents who loved it. After writing the Sea Archer, I went to another conference and pitched the book, receiving five requests for the novel. I found a home with The Wild Rose Press, who published it and this book, the Warrior’s Progeny. Next year, I hope to have both books turned into audio along with the remaining four books of the series.

Colton Stone is a newly traded tight end whose reputation is as battered as his football helmet. When he receives a vacation invitation from his new teammates, he accepts. There he collides with Dr. Lillian Morgan, a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon…

Colton Stone is a newly traded tight end whose reputation is as battered as his football helmet. When he receives a vacation invitation from his new teammates, he accepts. There he collides with Dr. Lillian Morgan, a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon, and doesn't know what to think.

A widow with two children, Lilly is looking forward to her friends' wedding. When she meets Colton Stone, his arrogant attitude only makes her long for the love she took for granted. Lilly struggles between letting go of her perfect past for an uncertain future.

Strange events occur, out of the realm of normal consciousness. When black energy touches their world Colt and Lilly become the pawns of the immortal Greek gods. Is the love developing between them natural, or part of a larger prophecy?

Any new projects on the horizon?

Next year, Dee’s Cornucopia will come out (I’m editing it now). There will be four more books in the Heaven & Earth series, and I’ve just started book three. I also have a YA book in development and a political thriller I’m trying to decide whether or not I’m going to publish. So, lots of things popping!

Words of advice for fellow writers in the trenches:

Get comfortable talking about yourself as a writer. When someone asks you what you do, tell them you’re a writer and own it!

What was the hardest part of the story to write/research?

The hardest part for me with writing by far is the editing! I don’t enjoy it at all! Everything else is cream cheese!

Now for an excerpt…

“You couldn’t have known,” Colt said.

“I’m a doctor,” she retorted. “I’m trained to know.”

“Oh, bullshit.” She drew her brows together and looked at him with

irritation. Undaunted, he continued. “You were his wife, not his doctor.” Glancing back at the picture, he drank from his glass. “He was a young guy...looked fit...father of two.” Colt turned to look at her again. “Young, fit, fathers of two don’t get stage four pancreatic cancer and die in ten months. He wasn’t your patient, Lillian, and you weren’t looking at him like a patient. He was your husband, and he died.”

“Colt.” She took a breath, placed a hand on his, and backed up a little. “Look, I know you want something, but we’re broken here, and I can’t give you what you...”

“Bullshit.”

“It’s not bullshit. It’s how I feel. I’ve got kids to think about and responsibilities. You want easy and I’m not that.”

“You don’t even know me, Lilly.”

“I know. That’s what I’ve been trying to say.”

“No, that’s what you’re trying to use as an excuse. Those kids aren’t damaged because of their dad, you are. Those kids have a mom who loves them and makes damn sure they aren’t damaged. You’re afraid to try, so you hide behind your dead husband.”

“How dare you be so callous?”

“How dare you use your husband to get out of trying again? You’re a beautiful, intelligent woman and your life isn’t over.”

Bloodborn by Sydney Winward

Welcome, Sydney!

What drew you to writing?

Growing up, I always wanted to be a baker or an artist. But then one night when I was 12 years old, I had a cool dream, one I wanted to write down. So I did. And it kept going and going and going. That was the first time I realized my dream of becoming an author. I had the endurance and drive to write a book, and that was something I wanted to explore.

Lots of practice and many years later, I was able to get Bloodborn published with The Wild Rose Press! I just signed my 4th contract, and I’m beyond excited. It may have taken a few years, but I’m so glad I never gave up my dream!

Bloodborn_w13596_med.jpg

Vampires killed his family. How can he love one?

Adam Degore's personal need to find a cure for vampirism drives him to ensnare a vampire, but the creature he captures is Dracula's daughter. Worse yet, he's drawn to her-a monster he's vowed to kill.

Despite her father's wishes, Willow chooses to live among humans instead of the vampire conclave where she would be safe. She wants a life filled with more than shadows. Being captured by a human, not to mention falling in love with one, is not part of her plan.

With vampires and blood hunters closing in on their chosen prey, Adam and Willow need to trust one another. But will that trust come in time for them to survive and find a future together?

Tell us about your experience with the publishing process.

My number one goal as a writer was to get published traditionally. For a long time, I just wrote stories for fun, but one day, it hit me that I really needed to stop dragging my feet. So I sat down at the computer, perused Pinterest until an idea struck me, and I began my novel, Bloodborn, that very same night. One book turned into two, which turned into three, and now I have written six in the series! The Wild Rose Press took a bite at my query, and when they offered me a contract, I was over the moon! My publishing experience with them has been incredible. Lill Farrell is an amazing editor, and RJ, Lisa, and Rhonda have been incredible through the whole process as well. With so much support as an author there, I couldn’t imagine publishing with anyone else!

Any new projects on the horizon?

I came up with a “princess” series idea. Each story will feature a different princess story, and then I will offer them as gifts in my newsletter. I already have one available in my newsletter, Princess and the Shepherd

The “princess” novella I’m working on right now currently has no title, but it has been fun writing it. A prince’s parents are killed, and as heir to the throne, Sterling Winfield is forced to ascend at age eighteen in the midst of a war. In order to keep his throne, law requires him to be married.

Kathleen de Clare is anything but enthusiastic to become the bride of the young king. Not only was he two years younger than her, but he also looked like a boy, and not a man. On their wedding day, an assassin gets past their defenses and nearly kills Sterling. In his fear, he sends Kathleen away to an abbey deep within the mountains for her safety. Two years pass without her seeing her new husband. When she finally returns home from the abbey, she finds a man who she does not recognize. In her shock, she realizes the boy she had married had become a man in her absence.

It’s safe to say she’s not quite so disappointed anymore...

Words of advice for fellow writers in the trenches:

The querying process can be so discouraging! We’ve all been there (and if you haven’t, good for you!) Just keep going at it. Keep trying. Keep writing. But don’t give up! It can take months. It can take years. But it’s really worth it in the end to hold your published book in your hands.

What was the most interesting part of the story to research?

How fast and how far can a horse run without tiring? I had to tweak a couple scenes because my character’s horse traveled too quickly. It’s such a pain to have to follow rules sometimes! Why do the laws of physics have to make sense? ;)

Thirsty for a bit more? Here’s an excerpt from Bloodborn:

The sounds of a trickling stream turned into a raging waterfall, silver like the moonlight that waited to shine as dusk fell into something darker. The thunderous water was almost too much for her overly sensitive ears, but she would bear it. At least for a time.

The waterfall drew her nearer until she stood on the edge of the cliff, looking down. White spray shot downward into a pool far below. There was something…mystical about these waters. It looked too clear. Untouched. And she couldn’t tell where the water originated from. Higher on the mountaintop, perhaps? It almost appeared from thin air.

She took another step forward and hissed as the spray hit her skin, stinging her like a sharp needle. At first, she assumed a stabbing rock hit her, but learned the truth when the water left glaring red marks on her skin.

Her eyes widened as she realized where they were—the Throat of Druxix. The clearest, purest water in all the kingdom, uncontaminated by human hands. She had heard many stories about priests traveling days, weeks, even years to acquire the smallest vial of the water, assuming they knew the location of the falls. The water was coveted next to coin.

Holy water.

She snapped her head in Adam’s direction, only to find an iron sword pointed right at her breast. He betrayed her. He lied to her. He used her! And he played her for a fool. Somehow, she had allowed herself to hope that given enough time, something beautiful might blossom between them. She now understood it had been a vain hope, and she had been a fool.

She took a step back, away from him, putting as much distance between them as she was able.

“How could you?” she gasped, taking another step backward, but to back up much further would result in falling over the edge of the cliff and into the holy waters below. However, he was blocking her escape, a menacing sword close to penetrating her skin. Any false move would result in an iron sword through her heart. “How could you take me here?”

“I couldn’t tell you,” he answered, his voice thick with emotion. “It’s the only way. It’s the last thing I could do. For Zachariah.”

She felt numb. After everything that had happened between them, he still meant to kill her? But he was her mate. Mates were supposed to look after one another.

“Don’t do this,” she whispered, taking yet another step backward but stopping in her tracks when the roaring of the falls crashed into her ears like the loud toll of a bell signaling a vampire getting burned at the stake.

She would meet the same fate, except the only audience she would have was Adam and it was holy water instead of fire. She didn’t know which was worse. “I care for you, Adam. I want you to give me a chance.”

“I don’t have a choice. I need my brother back. He’s the only family I have left.”

Her heart ached badly, and she almost wished he would run her through with the weapon, finishing the deed. It might hurt less.

“I could be something to you,” she whispered in earnest.

His only response was to press the tip of his sword closer to her heart. “You’re a vampire, Willow. I’m a blood hunter. Why can’t you understand? This is the way things have to be.”

“No, it’s not! Past mistakes can be forgiven.”

He shook his head, his expression hard. “It’s time for me to end this.”

A tear escaped her eye and trailed down her cheek. “You want me to die?” If he asked it of her, she would do it. He was her mate. Mates looked after one another. They had the other’s best interests at heart. But he wasn’t a vampire, which was why choosing him had been a gamble.

“Your death will benefit no one at the moment,” he said. “I need to find a cure. Before the crusaders find Zachariah and kill him.”

“That’s what this is about? But Adam—”

Her words were cut off as the ledge crumbled beneath her feet. She screamed as she fell. But when she expected to be consumed by fiery water, he grabbed her hand and she found herself dangling precariously over the edge, silver spray soaking her hair and stinging her skin. The world stopped for a moment. Her legs dangled, and the only thing keeping her from death was the hand of a misled blood hunter.

“Just do it!” she screamed. “End it!”

He hesitated. Why did he hesitate?

She shrieked as the water burned her. Pins and needles.

“Isn’t this what you wanted?” she shouted to him. “Let me go and end it!”

“It was what I wanted! Is.” He emphasized the last word. “If you are cleansed, maybe my brother can be too! Willow, you can be cured.”

She shook her head as she desperately clung to his hand, her feet trying and failing to find a hold in the cliff face. Tears streamed down her face, their reddish tint staining her cheeks. “The only cure is death! Adam, if you do this, I will die.”

Mystic Maples by Tena Stetler makes its Deerbourne Inn series premiere!

Welcome, Tena!

From Tena: “Mystic Maples is my contribution to the multi-author series The Deerbourne Inn. If you haven’t read any of the series, I highly recommend them. Each story is written by a different author and share scenes within Willow Springs, Vermont centering on The Deerbourne Inn and its cast of quirky characters.”

(Jean here…I second the above! What a great series so far!)

What inspired this (specific) story?

After reading all the original information set out for the multi-author series The Deerbourne Inn, Mercy and Sil began chattering in my mind. They claimed the setting was perfect for their story. Once I did the character worksheets I always do before starting a story, I discovered they were right.   I love writing small town stories and putting a paranormal twist on them.

Any interesting discovery or tidbit of info while researching/writing this book?

I had to research the process of making Sugar Maple sap into Maple syrup, so I would know the equipment used, the buildings used and the time of year. My hero took over Mystic Maples the family maple business in Willow Springs, Vermont. Did you know sugaring season for maple syrup is from early February through late March?

Fun Facts:

  • It takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of pure maple syrup.

  • Pure maple syrup contains antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and amino acids – making it good for your health and a great alternative to refined sugar (in moderation of course).

  • REAL maple syrup is 100% fat free and contains no preservatives.

  • Buy extra! You can keep maple syrup in the freezer for a very very long time (like forever)! It will never freeze solid. Always keep your open bottle of syrup in the refrigerator.

  • There is actually a law in Vermont making it illegal to label a product on a restaurant menu or food package as “maple” if it is not pure maple syrup. Vermonters take this stuff seriously!

Tell us one unique thing about you many might not know.

I was a radio DJ for two years on a Classic Rock Station KKFM. It was a fun job, the perks of attending the rock concerts and meeting the bands rocked, but the pay sucked! It was an experience I enjoyed.

Once again her insatiable curiosity overwhelmed her good sense.

He reached out. It all happened like slow motion, he grabbed her arm pulling her out of her thoughts. Reflex action on her part caused a jolt of magic spark to snap from her palm. A direct hit to his solar plexus. Uh-oh—there goes the offer of his cottage. “I’m so sorry,” she blurted.

Doubling over, he gasped for air. She had to admire him. He stayed on his feet.

Adrenalin surged through her veins, the fight or flight response alive and well. A final glance at him to make sure he was recovering, then she snapped her fingers and disappeared.

Back in her room at Deerbourne Inn, she paced around, stopped and stomped her foot. “Damn it!” Then she returned to pacing. Grabbing her phone, she scrolled to her sister’s number, turned it off silent, then froze. Her sense of self-preservation and good sense kicked in.

She could just see her sister, arms crossed over her chest, lips pursed, and shaking her head. Then in that condescending tone Hope would say, “Again.” She tossed the phone on the bed. Fell backward onto the handmade quilt and stared at the ceiling.

A whoosh of cool air washed over her. She shifted her gaze toward the window. It was closed. A woman’s filmy outline floated across the floor, taking a familiar shape. As the apparition settled onto the bed a slight indentation on the covers appeared. She sat up.

The ghost touched her hand. “My, my, what has you so upset?”

The specter’s touch was cool, sending shivers down her spine. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. At her second attempt to speak only a squeak was audible.

“Come, come now, girl, spit it out.” The ghost’s smile was reassuring.
