I’m Bernie Brown, and my book baby, I Never Told You, is over a year old now. The book is about a mother and daughter who hide their true selves for fear of losing each other’s love. In small town Iowa in 1965, the narrow social norms provoke the two women’s battles with society, themselves, and each other. Do Anna and Katya spend their lives estranged and embittered? Or do they open their hearts and minds to a new kind of relationship? I Never Told You is available online and in local bookstores whose addresses are listed below.

In the fall of 2019 and the first two months of 2020, I had several local events to launch and publicize my book. I planned to visit eight locations in Iowa, returning to the area where I grew up and where the book is set. In March, Covid became a household word, and the world shut down. All the venues closed and I stayed put here in Raleigh, NC. The pandemic put an end to my book tour. Perhaps when Covid passes, I can go to Iowa with two books in tow.

Now it’s December and I spend my days wrapping presents, sending cards, and cooking. I have eked out short periods to work on my new book Every Delay is a Gift. I found this phrase in a travel magazine years ago, and it describes the mindset one needs while traveling. In my book, a married couple, Hank and Millie, celebrate their retirements with a trip. In Mainz, Germany; Florence, Italy; St. Ives, Cornwall; and the Channel Islands Hank and Millie have adventures and misadventures with locals and tourists. To each other, they reveal some welcome and not-so-welcome surprises. Delays big and small interrupt their trip, and they don’t always consider them gifts. But by trip’s end they have discovered new talents and admirable qualities in each other and themselves.

I have high hopes for 2021. I will finish Every Delay is A Gift and my publisher will like it. We will get vaccinated, burn our masks, hug each other, and hold live book readings. I hope one of those readings will be for Every Delay is a Gift.

Bernie is an Iowa farm girl transplanted to Raleigh, North Carolina. Bernie's Iowa childhood, her travels in the States and Europe, and her contemporary life in Raleigh influence her short stories and essays. She isn't sure where the urge to write ghost stories comes from. Their source is a mystery. Bernie has Bachelor's and Master's degrees in English from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. One of her stories was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and another was among contest winners in an anthology by Grateful Steps Publishing. She is a writer-in-residence at the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities and a member of the Women's Fiction Writers Association. Learn more about Bernie at berniebrownwriter.com.
