Flight Path by Lisa Wilkes

Welcome, Lisa!

Tell us about what you write. When did your writing journey begin?

My writing journey has been as unconventional as my whirlwind, jet-setting lifestyle! When I was eight years old, I wrote a book about a lost kitty cat. It was 69 hand-written pages in a neon Lisa Frank notebook, and it was truly abysmal in terms of style and content. But it sparked a lifelong desire to compose books. During my sophomore year of college, I penned a full-length adult novel, which made me feel somewhat invincible. After all, if I could complete one book, why not finish two or three…or ten?

Over the years, my life has done a complete 180. I moved all over the country, switched careers, met and married my soulmate, taught classes to fellow flight attendants, adopted a couple animals, joined an animal rescue team at my airline, and started graduate school. One thing has remained constant: my passion for writing novels. Although Flight Path will be my first published book, it’s the 13th one I have completed (14th, if you count that incredibly lame tale composed by my eight-year-old self!). I’m excited to see Flight Path in print after all these years of daydreaming, writing feverishly, and following my whimsical heart.

Do you find inspiration in your own life for your writing?

A spicy rendezvous will either destroy or define her.

Flight attendant Callie Schneider doesn't remember much about her wild South Florida layover. Her rendezvous with handsome stranger Andrew was great, but a relationship is the last thing on her mind. Her life, a blend of global adventures and dazzling nights, is already perfect. Repercussions from that night threaten her carefree lifestyle and she is forced to reevaluate what is truly important. Will a bi-coastal romance filled with surprises she could never imagine finally bring her down to earth?

Every story I’ve written contains slivers of truth. I always insert small details from real-life experiences, because this makes the story more authentic and relatable. These references are often tweaked to fit the story. For instance, my novel Flight Path features a flight attendant for a fictional airline, SkyLine Airways. While Callie’s tale is pure fiction, I relied on my personal knowledge as a stewardess to provide authentic references to airplanes, overnight cities, and cabin crew dynamics.

What’s on the horizon?

I’m working on a follow-up novel to Flight Path called Mid-Flight. It’s not a sequel; rather, Mid-Flight features a different flight attendant at the same fictional airline. This time, my novel will touch on the subject of family dynamics during a moment of crisis. The story depicts a budding romance that is thrown into chaos when the main character’s brother falls ill. I wanted to capture the complexity of sibling bonds as well as the unfailing resilience of familial love.
