A visit with N. Jade Gray

Welcome, N. Jade Gray!

What do you write?

My first two books, All for the Love of a Cowboy and Raider of Her Heart, are historical time travel romance novels. I got hooked on reading time travel romance some time ago. So, when I began to write seriously that was where my stories and ideas gravitated towards. I currently don’t have another time travel story in my noggin’. But, maybe one of these days another one will appear.

Tell us about your experience with the publishing process.

My first two novels are published traditionally through The Wild Rose Press, a small publishing house in New York. I chose the small press route because I still hold a full-time day job and the self-publishing route concerned me with the time and research it would take to accomplish. I had the same editor, Nicole D’Arienzo, for both of my stories. I’m thankful for Nicole’s patience and knowledge. I have been happy with my experience with Wild Rose Press.

Any new projects on the horizon?

My current project I’m trying my hardest to work on is a Christmas romantic comedy. The plan is for it to be novel length as well.

What inspired Raider of her Heart?

August 21, 2013 was the 150th anniversary of William Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence, Kansas. I read an article about the event. My mind began to spin ideas in my head around writing a story based on the Burning of Lawrence. The idea for Raider of Her Heart was born.

Did a trip there inspire you?

Oh yes! My husband and I took a trip one weekend up to the Lawrence area to get a feel for the area. We went to the Watkins museum to study the events and also drove the route Quantrill and his men had taken.

Excerpt:

Stopping in front of the closest stall, she smiled at Judson. “This is Skittles.” She cupped a hand to her mouth and whispered, “Don’t tell the others, but she’s my favorite.”

His gaze took in the stall and then met hers. A frown marred his brow. “It’s empty.”

Had the knock on the head impaired his vision? He must be teasing. She chuckled. “No, it’s not.”

His gaze followed her pointing finger. “Holy Hell.”

The curse made her and Skittles jump. He stumbled away from the stall. What little color he had obtained in the last twenty-four hours drained from his face.

“Judson?”

Gasping for air, he leaned on the barn wall for support. “What happened to the tiny filly?”

She frowned as she glanced from him to the horse. “I don’t understand what you are asking.”

He struggled with swallowing before he asked, “Where’s the rest of her?”

“The rest of…?” A belly laugh grew and bubbled out from her lips. “Judson, haven’t you ever seen a miniature horse before?”

He shook his head. “Are they all like this?”

She chuckled. “Like what?”

“Short. Squatty. Not all there?”

Was he serious? The laughter died an untimely death in her throat as she noticed his features. He had to be. No way could she misinterpret the panic mirrored in his eyes. Her precious babies were creeping him out.
